Makkarakoski Sawmill

The current Makkarakoski sawmill was built in 1875 to replace a sawmill that had been destroyed by fire. The saw frames came to a halt when operations ended in February 1956, and the original equipment dating back to the 1880s was left in place. For this reason, the sawmill preserves a unique piece of industrial history.

The Makkarakoski sawmill is an exceptional example of the life cycle of a sawmill. It was first powered by water, then by steam, and finally by electricity. Its uniqueness lies in the fact that there is likely no comparable sawmill museum elsewhere in Europe.
The Makkarakoski Sawmill Museum can be visited with a guide on public guided tours or by advance booking. A guided tour lasts approximately 50 minutes. The exhibition space is not accessible. Public tours depart from the Ahlström Voyage exhibition space (Makkarakoskentie 34 B).

Café Voyage, located in the Ahlström Voyage exhibition premises, is open from Saturday, May 9, on Saturdays from 10.30 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. After Midsummer, during the period June 22–July 22, the café is open Monday to Saturday from 10.30 a.m. to 4.30 p.m., and on Sundays from 11.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m. From Saturday, August 8, the café will be open on Saturdays until the end of September from 10.30 a.m. to 4.30 p.m.
