"WINTER in the grips of CHANGE”
Ville Heikkinen, Jarmo Manninen and Markus Varesvuo
The Earth is warming up at an unprecedented pace.
The Earth’s climate has varied through the billions of years o its existence. The North has alternated between ice ages and warm periods. Climate change is not a new phenomenon, but the fast pace of the change is.
The climate isn’t only warming up, it is veering into chaos as the planetary wind system and water cycle seek new positions and the many extremes in weather, such as storms, heavy rains, heat waves and extreme cold, repeat increasingly frequently.
The Arctic region is warming up at twice the pace of the rest of the planet. Finland too has warmed up over two degrees in the past 150 years. The beginning of winter is warmer by five degrees, and spring starts weeks earlier.
The North disappears because there is no more room for it.
