Curator’s lecture Ira Westergård: Anna Sinebrychoff – for the family and a better society

Sinebrychoff Art Museum, Helsinki

  • 9.9.2026 (18-19)

Anna Sinebrychoff (1830–1904) was Paul Sinebrychoff’s wife and a powerful figure in the wealthy merchant family. After her husband’s death, she oversaw the running of the family business and took active part in social projects and support for the arts. In her lecture Ira Westergård, curator of the Anna Sinebrychoff – Ahead of Her Time exhibition, talks about lesser-known aspects of Anna Sinebrychoff’s life and the research done for the exhibition.

During her long lifetime, Anna Sinebrychoff left a weighty footprint, both within the family and outside the home. The lecture opens up perspectives on life in Helsinki society in the 19th century and the challenges of the city’s development. Anna Sinebrychoff’s fascinating life is placed in its historical 19th-century context.
