ROBE DE STYLE: Where Rococo meets Art Deco

Fashion historian Janne Helene Arnesen will give this lecture, diving into the robe de style as a phenomenon, and how it was interpreted in the Nordic countries.
The past is an endless source of inspiration for fashion designers. In the 1920s it resulted in the robe de style, also known as the ‘Picture Dress’. The style combines the straight silhouette of the 1920s with a hint of the 18th century decadence: Paniers, drapes, bows and embroideries. Glancing into both the past and the future, the robe de style represents a unique style, while at the same time being symptomatic for a grander movement.
This movement is the context for the exhibition Poetic Reality.
