The Living Traditions of the Hazara People

The Roots and Reflections exhibition, produced by the Finnish Hazara Cultural Association, highlights the rich cultural heritage of the Hazara community and its significance in multicultural Finland.
The Hazara people originate from Afghanistan, where their history has been marked by persecution, discrimination, and forced displacement since the late 19th century. Despite these challenges, the Hazara have preserved a strong cultural identity shaped by language, artistic traditions, craftsmanship, and a strong sense of community. Today, Hazara communities live across the world, including in Finland.
The exhibition explores how cultural heritage is maintained in situations where people are forced to leave their homelands. The jewelry, textiles, handicrafts, and historical materials on display tell stories of everyday life, celebrations, and values, as well as how traditions are carried into new environments. Many of the objects are personal items that have traveled with their owners from Afghanistan to Finland.
Roots and Reflections makes the Hazara community in Finland visible and invites visitors to discover a culture that remains vibrant in the diaspora. At the same time, the exhibition promotes intercultural dialogue and increases understanding of cultural diversity.
