Treasures of beauty

Art from the Emil Aaltonen Museum’s collection

The exhibition Treasures of beauty displays work, by the masters of Finland’s golden age, on the walls of the Poikilo art museum. Mining counselor Emil Aaltonen (1869-1949) put together an extensive art collection through the 1910s and the 1940s. Some of its brightest jewels are paintings by Albert Edelfelt, Akseli Gallén-Kallela, Werner Holmberg, Hjalmar Munsterhjelm, Hugo Simberg, Maria Wiik, the von Wright brothers and Victoria Åberg, as well as sculptures by Johannes Takanen. The collection also includes older, foreign art.

Mining counselor and industrialist Emil Aaltonen became interested in culture and art when a young man. Success as a shoe factory owner, and then in machinery and plastics manufacturing, provided an opportunity to support art and science. Aaltonen believed that economic wellbeing was only possible if the national culture was at a high level. The process of building the collection influenced Aaltonen's views on beauty, aesthetics, and spirituality.
