When Porkkala gave way to Estonia

The Soviet base Suurpea was closed, but still has Russian inhabitants

Already in 1953, the Soviet Union established the Suurpea military base about 70 kilometres east of Tallinn. Thanks to the truly deep Hara laht-bay military strategists of the Russian Czars already focused on this very place. Nobody knows whether leaving Porkkala was on the Soviet agenda already in 1953. Still, in the 1900s Hara laht was offering submarines better options than Porkkala could ever do. However in 1955 the last barracks from Porkkala were brought to Suurpea where the Soviet base continued working until 1993. A part of the Russian inhabitants remained in Suurpea.
