Ateneum Art Museum

Kaivokatu 2,

The Ateneum is Finlands best-known art museum and the home of Finnish art. NB: Exceptional opening hours from 2 June to 2 August 2020. Normal opening hours will be resumed as of Tuesday 4 August 2020.

Classics with a twist

The images held by Ateneum are ingrained in the collective memory of the Finnish people. The beloved works in Ateneums collections date from the period from the 19th century to the modern age. The hugely popular exhibitions of Finnish and international art open up new perspectives into the past and the future. The guest stars of the temporary exhibitions have included names such as Tove Jansson, Amedeo Modigliani, Pablo Picasso and Helene Schjerfbeck.

The Stories of Finnish Art exhibition celebrates the Ateneum collections. The exhibition guides visitors through the development of Finnish art, from 1809 up until the 1970s. On display, side by side, are Finnish and international masterpieces from Ateneums collections, such as Le Corbusier's Two Women (1939), Hugo Simbergs The Wounded Angel (1903), Edvard Munch's Bathing Men (190708) and Vincent van Goghs Street in Auvers-sur-Oise (1890). Rediscover your favourite works of art and fall in love with new ones!

The Ateneum is home to events of all kinds: every month, the museum organises workshops, lectures, guided tours and clubs. Ateneum Art Museum is part of the Finnish National Gallery, together with the Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma and Sinebrychoff Art Museum.
