In their concert, Andreas Helling and Patrik Kleemola bring together the relatively rare instrumental combination of cello and guitar. Mikko Heiniö’s work Mot Natten for cello and guitar is dedicated to the composer’s long-time collaborator and friend, Bo Carpelan. The piece draws both its inspiration and its title from Carpelan’s posthumous poetry collection.

Joaquin Rodrigo, one of the most significant Spanish composers of the 20th century, is best known for his Concierto de Aranjuez, particularly its beautiful Adagio movement. However, he also composed a substantial body of solo guitar works, including Tres Piezas Españolas, heard in this concert, which Rodrigo wrote at the request of the Spanish guitarist Andrés Segovia.

The concert concludes with Franz Schubert’s Arpeggione Sonata, one of the favourite works of both soloists. The arpeggione, developed in Vienna in the early 19th century, had six strings and frets like a guitar but was played with a bow, in the manner of a cello. It is therefore natural to hear the work in an arrangement for cello and guitar, as this combination aptly captures the intimate character of the piece.
