Sanna Johansson: The Vanishing Horizon

In recent years, Johansson has regularly traveled between Helsinki and Porvoo. The landscapes she has encountered along the way have transformed into images in the artist’s mind. The exhibition The Vanishing Horizon is built upon these images shaped during her journeys.

Landscapes have been a central focus of Johansson’s work for several years. She photographs on film, drawn to its materiality and grainy aesthetic. Her visual inspiration stems from Pictorialism, a photographic movement prominent at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, characterized by deliberate softness and blur.

Through their atmosphere, Johansson’s images transcend the boundaries of time and place, while remaining anchored in the present moment. The works convey a sense of calm that feels especially meaningful in today’s often unsettled world. Their expressive power leads the viewer to the threshold between the familiar and the dreamlike.

With Sanna Johansson’s exhibition, Porvoo Museum presents contemporary photographic art for the first time in its exhibition program. Alongside recognized classical artists, the museum now highlights a still relatively unknown artist who demonstrates a confident and distinctive artistic voice.
